BACKGROUND

A bit of history
The Russian steppes peoples from Mongolia and the nomads from the Sahara have been drinking horse's milk since time immemorial to strengthen the body and as a cure against a number of diseases. Lately horse's milk is also more and more used in Europe and since 1997 this natural product is also available in our regions.

The mares
All our mares are Belgian draught horses that live together with their foals in one big herd on the pasture and in the open loose yard. When the foals are eight weeks old and therefore able to eat hay, grass and concentrates themselves, we start milking the mares. In the morning the mares are seperated from the foals in another loose yard, so we can milk them 5 times a day (every three hours). For a good milk production and the well-being of the foals they get healthy and varied food the whole day through. During the lactation period (about half a year) the mares are not treated with drugs and are regularly examined by the vet.
